Baldwin previously defined the group's enigmatic moniker as an effort to establish a mysterious entity greater than the sum of its members. Wes, a pianist and vocalist who had previously worked with other Alaskan bands, completed the line-up. As a band with minimal resources, they had a rough start in the Pacific Northwest, but drummer Jason came on board to solidify their line-up. The Internet (the musicians heavily used MySpace for commercial reasons) and Portugal helped raise the group's fame. Before releasing their first album, they released an EP in 2005.
